What Is A Nutritionist?
The market for health products is growing at an astounding rate. Not only do consumers want to become healthier than ever, but they also seek the advice of the health professionals who are all too eager to give it out: at a price. Many products and services have seen a surge in their demand, such as: gym memberships, health foods, fitness classes, posture-exercises and dietary advice.
Nutrition is a sector within the health industry that has not only seen a surge, but a mini-revolution. After all, twenty years ago, who would think to make an appointment with my nutritionist? To put it simply, the practice of nutritionists is one that has evolved out of demand for a healthier lifestyle by the general public.
What is a nutritionist? Well, honestly, that's a pretty good question. Not only is it one of the most vague 'professions' out there on the job market, but being a nutritionist requires virtually no training or qualifications. As a result, many self-proclaimed 'nutritionists' advertise themselves on the health market. To put it quite simply, you and I could say that we were nutritionists and no one would be able to stop us. The term, dietitian, however is protected in countries such as the UK and US, to only be used by trained experts and qualified professionals. Therefore, on an average basis, dietitians are more likely to be credible than nutritionists.
All of the fakery aside, however, and it's clear that 'real' nutritionists with training and accolades in their field can do a very good job of turning someone's diet around. Not only do nutritionists offer advice on diet, but they also show their clients a better way of living: more healthily, and therefore more happily. With a nutritionist managing your lifestyle, you can expect to be a healthier and happier person; generally only through changes in your diet.
You may be thinking that it sounds far too easy to just follow the advice of a nutritionist and expect to see real gains in health and weight-loss. However, it is clear that with modern dietary patterns, many Americans are living unhealthily, and with only a few tweaks to their diets, could see rapid changes in their health and well-being. It follows that the advice of a nutritionist in such a scenario is paramount in overseeing such changes.
Many people will find themselves in a situation in which it's difficult to go to the gym 5 times a week, which is often the case if you want to see real results. However, nutritionists have shown that much easier and far less time-consuming changes to the average diet can have a similar affect as going to the gym. Diet and exercise go hand in hand, and so following both the advice of a nutritionist (on diet) and a personal trainer (on exercise) can be the perfect combination to not only getting your life onto a healthier tack, but also making you a happier individual.
Most nutritionists have used the FDA pyramid to create meal plans. For many people the pyramid was very complicated and not user friendly. Even when the nutritionist explains the pyramid ad nauseum, the plan never seemed to have the desired impact. Finally, the powers that be decided to scrap the difficult to understand pyramid and replace it with a very easy to understand plate. First Lady Michelle Obama first unveiled the new creation aptly name My Plate. What could be more familiar than a dinner plate? The dinner plate is divided into 4 sections. The sections represent fruits, vegetables, grains and protein. Next to the plate is a small circle which represents dairy products. Also with Mrs. Obama was The Surgeon General Dr. Regina Benjamin and the Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack.
Mrs. Obama praised the My Plate icon as a way for nutritionists and laymen to choose the right foods for a healthy diet. At a glance the meal planners can see immediately what types of food to include in their diets. Some nutritionists have complained that the protein section may be misleading because there are plenty of non meat items that can be consumed as protein. They urge that My Plate creators change protein to a more inclusive term.
At least two million dollars has been spent so far in education for nutritionists and the public alike so that My Plate can become a major step in helping Americans become healthier. Americans are getting larger and larger. The percentage of Americans who are obese rises each year. Even children are considered obese. Diabetes is on the rise with even teenagers and young adults being diagnosed with Diabetes 2 which in the past was considered a senior citizen disease.
Sometimes planning nutritional meals is just too difficult for many busy families. If that is the case, a nutritionist can become a life saver.
